If you’re not quite ready to take down your Christmas décor and still want to keep that holiday spirit around the home a while longer, we’ve got the perfect way to help you transition your decor into the New Year without looking like you’re still living in Santa’s Village.

After Christmas, I HATE having to take down my Christmas decor. Primarily because I’m tired, busy, and need 3 months to digest all the holiday treats; and secondly because they just make me so happy! I love that cozy feeling that all the lights and decorations bring to our home and taking it all down makes it look naked and in need of some OOMPH. So over the years I’ve found a happy in-between for a post-Christmas decor approach that keeps the house feeling warm and cozy for the winter months ahead.

First off, lets look at some lovely winter (but not so Christmasy) interiors that are great inspiration and jumping off point…

5 Tips to Transition Decor into the Winter Season:

  1. Remove All Red Decor

This includes ornaments, pillows, throws, signs, nativity scenes etc. Red is a classic Christmas colour, so as soon as you remove this, you are well on your way to transitioning into the winter season. This simple step will immediately transform your space and create a fresh new look for with calming neutrals.

  1. Keep the Greenery and Neutral Decor

Use the greenery left over from Christmas (as long as it doesn’t have red in it still) to bring in that outdoor wintery feel in. Your eucalyptus branches or evergreens can stay on your table or mantle. Leave any neutral décor and winter whites out as well. This includes your iridescent glass tree collection, paper star lamps, candle holders, or white snowmen figurines.

  1. Bring in Texture

Winter time is all about cozying up and getting comfy. Fill your sofa with soft, plush throw pillows and layer in extra-large blankets to relax in. Add sheepskin anywhere and everywhere, on the floor, bed, sofa or on the back of an armchair for an extra cozy touch. Knit items like pillow covers and throws, or woven wall hangings and fabric art can also add a lot of depth, so you don’t need a lot of bold colours to add visual interest to your space.

  1. Add Warmth

This can include twinkling lights, deliciously scented candles, or oil diffusers. Decorating for the winter season is all about creating a warm and inviting space and having the perfect low-level ambiance does just the trick.

  1. Organize and Declutter

The New Year brings a new beginning, and what better way to start than to have a fresh clean slate in your own home. Store or sell anything that you don’t love anymore for a new and inspiring look that will keep your mind sharp and clear for the New Year.
