A few weeks ago, J and I surprised everyone by running off and getting married (more or less)! Granted, there wasn’t that much running considering we did it at a small ceremony at our home here in Iqaluit, by the sea-ice.
It was a elopement of sorts; we told no one, planned it at the last minute, and just barely managed to rangle a few of our closest friends and family together for the event. It was the most perfect kind of wedding for us and it couldn’t have been a better day!
There were many people we would have loved to be with us in person, including my best friends and his siblings. However, living in the remote, expensive Arctic means that we are far from many of our extended family and friends, so organizing something like a wedding can quickly become a nightmare. We knew that if we started bringing people in from afar, aside from our parents, or got tied up putting too much planning into it, the event would ultimately snowball into something neither of us wanted or enjoyed. So we eloped – and I can’t recommend it enough.
Neither of us are very fond of big, formal weddings or having lots of attention on us (not something you might expect from a blogger, but it’s true), but we are especially not fond of putting expectations on others to spend tones of money and time away for our day – even though we know most people wouldn’t have minded. But we felt in principal that a wedding should be all about two people and doing what makes you happy – not putting people out. So that’s exactly what our day was. In keeping with this philosophy, we made the day all about us and had one of the most fun, stress-free, wonderful days together that we will forever remember.
Thanks to our friend and talented photographer, Curtis Jones, who came to our rescue only moments before our Big Day, we also have some lovely photos to remember it by and share with those who couldn’t be there. Posted here are just a few of my favorite shots!
I’m also happy to share the story of our rings posted by fellow blogger Jessica from Trademark Antiques, where we were lucky enough to find the most perfect Art Deco panel ring from. In the usual northern fashion, it was a unique challenge to procure – but worth it in the end! Check out Trademark Antiques Etsy page for your very own, one-of-a-kind Art Deco pieces.
